‘Kitchen’ by Banana Yoshimoto – Review

One of the many appeals of Banana Yoshimoto’s novella Kitchen is that it deals with feelings everyone can relate to. Everyone has been hungry, and images of hunger, food and meals are plentiful in the novella. Other common feelings also come up, especially sadness and loneliness.

Early in the book, the reader discovers the protagonist, Mikage Sakurai, was orphaned as a child, and that her family had decreased until she was the only one left. Mikage feels she is truly “all alone.” At one point, she says, “We live like the lowliest worms. Always defeated¾defeated we make dinner, we eat, we sleep. Everyone we love is dying.”

Despite the many sad events of the book, though, its tone is not generally one of sadness. This is because, despite all the negative turns of events in their lives, the characters know how to deal with unhappiness. Mikage, Eriko and Yuichi know how to be happy.

At first, Yuichi doesn’t seem to have a good way of coping with things that trouble him. This fact is first mentioned by his mother, Eriko. Eriko tells Mikage she knows she hasn’t been the perfect parent to Yuichi, because although he’s “a good kid,” there are some things she wasn’t able to teach him, things that “slipped through the cracks.” Eriko knows she didn’t teach Yuichi an effective way to deal with other people, and as a result “he’s confused about emotional things and he’s strangely distant with people.”

Yuichi shows this in the way he reacts to Eriko’s death. He avoids calling Mikage to tell her until a month after it happened. His reasoning was that telling Mikage would make Eriko’s death real for him. Yuichi didn’t want to have to deal with Mikage’s reaction. When he finally does call her, and they sit down to talk about it, Yuichi is drunk. In fact, he’s been drinking often in the weeks since Eriko died.

Yuichi learns to be happen when, still feeling terrible about his mother’s death, he goes to see Chika, a close friend of the family. Chika sends him off to an inn where he can be alone to think. Yuichi had been thinking about living with Mikage, but felt as if he needed to “pull himself together” first. While at the inn, Yuichi realizes he really does want to be with her. Yoshimoto ends her novella with Yuichi’s cheerful declaration that he’s going to pick up Mikage at the station. Readers get the sense he’s finally pulled himself together and can be happy with Mikage now.

Eriko had also gone through a time in her life when she was sad and confused about what to do. Yuichi tells Mikage that his “real” mother was another woman and that Eriko, who is transgendered, is Yuichi’s biological father. “After my real mother died,” Yuichi says, “Eriko quit her job, gathered me up, and asked herself, ‘What do I want to do now?'” After the death of his wife, the man who would become …

House Husbands – A Role Reversal

For centuries, we have been locked into gender roles of male as the provider and protector and female as home maker and nurturer. But the 21st century has seen the beginning of role reversals within the family. Men are opting to stay at home and become house husbands. The West, especially Canada, UK and USA, has accepted this new concept of stay-at-home husbands. Asian and Indian families are still a long way from doing so. Muslims believe that it is unislamic for a man to take on the role of a woman.

Reasons for Change:

• As mid-life approaches, many men feel trapped in stressful corporate jobs. They long for less demanding occupations and believe that house work and care of children is easier and will leave time for recreation and hobbies.

• There has been an unprecedented rise of women in the work force. Higher education and professional skills have shattered the glass ceiling, so that women are able to take on jobs which were once the prerogative of men. In many instances, they may be drawing higher salaries than their husbands. Sometimes women are the sole bread winners. Feminist ideologies, availability of contraception and the influence of the Media have also contributed to the rise of working women.

• Unemployment and loss of white collar jobs for men.

• Marvels of telecommunication allow men to work from home and thus ensure a regular pay packet. Working hours and patterns are flexible.

Advantages of being Full-time Fathers:

1. This eliminates the need for home help which is becoming expensive and unreliable. There are many instances of maids starving, sedating or ill treating children. Sometime ago, an Indian newspaper reported that a working woman came home in the middle of the day to find her child missing and the maid happily watching TV and munching peanuts. On questioning, the maid said she had sedated the baby and given him to a beggar woman, on a rental of Rs.100 per day.

Theft of food articles, money or jewelry has also been reported from time to time.

2. Children need not be left in child care centers during the day.

3. Participation of fathers in the parenting process is said to enhance the physical, emotional and behavioral development of children. They become more emotionally balanced and develop better coping skills. They grow up to be confident and self assured.

4. Mothers can pursue their careers without feeling guilty that children are not well cared for. Because they are stress free they are able to give their best to their jobs. When work is over, they are relaxed enough to spend quality time with the family and make up for their absence during the day.

5. Husbands become adept at managing the kitchen and discovering their latent culinary talents.

6. Men are likely to spend frugally and balance the budget efficiently. Women are sometimes prone to over-spending on things they don’t need or hoarding more than is required.

7. Housework is not discrediting …

Ancient Egypt Fish Tank Decor

There are numerous ancient civilizations that have awesome fish tank decorations these days. These include the Mayans, Asian and the always famous Greek ruins. Using any of these would create stunning scenes of times gone by, producing an air of wonder and discovery in your very own room.

The one ancient civilization that I personally love to use in my tank designs is the Ancient Egyptians. Who has not seen at least a photograph of the Great Pyramids or the towering mighty Sphinx. With the cool and extremely detailed tank ornaments you can get these days, you will be able to bring the exact replica of the Egyptian landscape into your aquarium.

With the Egyptian tank decor, you basically have a couple of options. You could create an outdoor scene, an indoor scene or just use Egyptian artifacts.

To create an outdoor Egyptian scene, you would be utilizing replicas of the massive structures that are synonym to Egypt. These would include the pyramids as well as the Sphinx. This is placed on top of a sand colored gravel to give it the impression of being in the desert. If you plan to use plants, they should not be of the leafy variety. Java Moss is one option you can look into. To make the theme work, a great idea is to place a fish tank background depicting a desert scene. This would give it a 3D effect to the whole design.

For the indoor effect, you would use indoor structures such as Egyptian columns as well as the Pharaoh’s sarcophagus. Place them to look like a scene from an archaeological dig. The gravel would still be sand colored. As a backdrop, you could either use one depicting Egyptian hieroglyphs or a rock face. These days you would be able to get 3D rock backgrounds where the rocks protrude out instead of a flat print. This makes theme look so much more realistic. Being indoors, you would not place any plants because they might make the theme look odd. You may place rocks if you wish, just make them out to look like they came crashing down from the roof of a temple. This means simply scattering them around the decor. Try not getting smooth faced river rocks, the ones you get should look as if they were once bricks that made up the walls.

Egyptian artifacts are new additions to the fish tank decorating scene. The most common ones that you can find are the Egyptian vases. Though they are only aquarium decor, they are made to look extremely authentic. What I love about the Egyptian vases is the holes that they always have in the side. These make awesome caves for the fish and if you have been following my posts all these years, you would know that I am big on caves for aquariums. Apart from the vases, another really cool tank ornament that I love a whole lot is a bust of Pharaoh. The bust is golden …

Will Commercial Zoning Increase Your Property Value?

If you have the correct combination of items and you have a large enough pocketbook, this may be your ticket to retirement. But sometimes, it’s your ticket to the poor house.

I looked at a home that is zoned mixed use. In this area, this means that you can either use the residence as a home or use the residence as a commercial site. These types of sites are usually limited to low impact items such as office buildings, apartments, etc.

What’s the catch? Well, you’ll have to own a large enough parcel of land to make a commercial deal work. This is why you see five homes along a busy street all for sale at once and the zoning is commercial. This is because in order to be approved for commercial development, there must be a large enough parcel to make the commercial development work.

Usually, for mixed residential zoning, these areas are close to town or close to other apartments or business in the area. I’ve appraised several of these types of property. Many times, advertising the zoning as mixed use is enough to sell the home for more just because it may appeal to that specific buyer that wants to live in the same home and run a business out of the home. One home that I appraised offered a living area on the main level and a daylight basement offered office buildings that were rented out.

My understanding is that some banks that specialize in residential zoning will not loan money on mixed use properties. This, of course, is a downfall, if you’re trying to get a residential loan. Some buyers will not want to use their residential home for office use. This will limit the number of buyers that may want to buy your home.

So, will commercial zoning increase your property value? If your home is a residential home with the best use as a residential use, commercial zoning may decrease your home value and make it difficult to get a loan and make it difficult to sell, because you’ll be located on a busy street. If your home is residential use and the highest and best use is to build a commercial structure, most often, your land used as commercial use will be more valuable than your home used as residential use.

So, the moral of the story is to keep an open mind on these types of properties. I looked at some homes the other day where the home is an older residential home with a larger lot. The zoning can be switched from residential to commercial for $1500. Residential homes with larger lots with similar zoning were selling for $350,000 to $400,000. Residential homes that have been switched to commercial zoning were selling for $500,000 to $700,000. So for $1500 and some time, this would be a good investment for your money.…

Flexible and Expandable House Plans – How to Achieve Affordable Homeownership

For many future homeowners, today’s economic environment can present a significant hurdle when it comes to the cost of home building. Be it a newly wed couple or downsizing baby boomers, the reality of what they need and what they can afford are at odds. Young couples can’t afford to build the size house they will need for their growing family. Retiring empty-nesters are faced with the dilemma of rising construction costs that have outpaced the value of their current homes from which they need to downsize. Even young singles with good jobs and promising careers don’t have the cash for a decent down-payment on a new home and are forced to rent.

Build in Stages

For people who can’t afford the entire home that they will ultimately need, starting out small, building in stages, one phase at a time may be just the right solution to set them on the path to affordable homeownership. This has proven to be quite a popular choice with our firm, especially for many young families. With the expectations of a growing family, starting out small and adding on later as the need arises and the budget allows, not only solves a limited budget problem but also avoids a potential hassle later on of selling and relocating to a larger home. And with the right kind of pre-planned expandable home design, the disruption of future building can be kept to a minimum, avoiding the loss of use and having to seek temporary living quarters.

Expandable house plans start with the basic essential rooms to be built during the first phase of construction. The construction plans provide, in advance, the specific structural details and specifications needed to easily accommodate subsequent additions with the least amount of disruption to daily family activities and limited retrofitting of the existing building. Future framed openings, wall pocket studs and plumbing/HVAC access are all anticipated in the layout and arrangement of the expandable home design. Complete, detailed construction plans are provided for all future additions showing the exact location with respect to the existing first phase, as well as the exterior elevations of what the entire final project will look like.

Expandable and Flexible House Plans

Expandable, build-in-stages house plans aren’t just for young families seeking a starter home. We have seen a growing request at our design firm for future retirement/semi-retirement combo-vacation homes. People planning for the future by building in stages with multi-use expandable home designs are starting out small with either vacation cottages or small rental homes.

One expandable house plan in particular we designed for a client was for a build-in-stages combination vacation and retirement home in a small village where their young daughter just accepted a new job. Noted for its ideal retirement qualities, this mountain and lake region provided a welcomed vacation retreat from their city lives and daily work, as well as a place for their daughter to live until she could afford a down payment on a home of her own. Completing a Bathroom Remodel? Learn How to Measure For Tile

How to measure for tile when completing a bathroom remodel

Imagine this, you are thinking of remodeling a bathroom and already have an established budget. You are at a tile shop and see a tile sample you like. The price of the tile is $ 5.00 a square foot. How do you know if this $ 5.00 a square foot tile is within your budget? In addition to the tile, how much should I budget for the grout and sealer?

In a recent article I provided information on the different types of tiles that are available for your bathroom remodel. Now it is time to learn how to measure for your tiling project and calculate the cost for your tiles and related tiling supplies.

There are different types of tile you will need to tile your bathroom:

  • Field Tile
  • Trim Tile

Field tile is the main body of tile for your remodeling project. For example, if you are tiling your shower, the field tile is the tile on the walls of your shower. The field tile covers the largest area of your tiling project. A common size for field tile is 12 inches by 12 inches. Field tile is sold by square footage, so you need to take the area for the field tile and calculate the square footage.

Trim tile is divided into two categories:

  • Accent trim tile (to be set in with the field tile)
  • Border trim tile (to finish off the field tile)

How to Measure

Let's go through an example to help you go through the tile measuring process. In this example, we are going to install tile for a bathtub with a shower surrounding.

For a bathtub with a shower surround, you will need a tile for the three walls. The tile will be installed to a height of 6 feet (6 ') above the tub deck.

The first wall is 5 feet wide. The two end walls are each 3 feet wide. To determine the tile square footage, you need to measure the width of each of the three walls and multiply it by the height of your shower surrounding.

Let's start measuring the first wall:

  • 5 'wide (60 inches) by 6' feet tall. 5 X 6 = 30 square feet.

Then you need to measure both end walls:

  • 3 'feet deep (36 ") X 6' tall. 3 X 6 = 18 Square feet.
  • 3 'feet deep (36 ") X 6' tall. 3 X 6 = 18 Square feet.

Then, you need to add the measurements of all three walls together:

  • 66 square feet of field tile is needed for the shower surrounding.

I recommend to my clients to account for a 20% waste factor when setting tile. Keep in mind the tile could be discontinued, the tile could be on back order for numerous weeks, or many other problems could arise if you run short of tile when remodeling your bathroom. An additional 20% of tile for 66 square feet equals an additional …

How and Why a Brass Bathroom Faucet is the Best Choice

Brass is a metal that we humans have been using for thousands of years. It has had mention numerous times in both history and prehistory, and it even has several mentions in the King James Bible. Due to this, it is now known all over the world due to its weight, durability and appeal. This has carried on even to the bathroom fixtures of the present day. With their advantages, a brass bathroom faucet may be the best choice of fixture you can get for your bathroom. Let this article list the reasons why.

Durability – It is well known among architects, interior designers and engineers alike that a brass faucet fixture will far outlast any of its plated or non metal counterparts. This is particularly true when you constantly run hard water through your bathroom faucets: hard water will corrode most other metals (even plated ones) yet it will have little to no effect on a brass bathroom faucet. Actually, it is not only the metal itself that lasts a long time, but its finish as well: brass bathroom faucets, especially those that are coated with electroplated chrome or a simple finish that prevents oxidation, are known to last a lifetime with little need for scrutiny in the form of polishes and waxes.

Appeal – A brass bathroom faucet has a rustic yet classic aesthetic to it. Its color, which resembles a muted shade of gold, is a classic one, a nice warm shade that can evoke very subtle feelings of comfort for those using it. It is one which, when paired properly with other fixtures, can turn the act of walking into a bathroom into a visual extravaganza.

Hygienic properties – It is a little known fact that brass is actually germicidal in nature. This is due to the oligodynamic effect, which is caused by the copper in brass: this effect denatures several enzymes in most microorganisms, which effectively kills them. This makes a brass bathroom faucet probably one of the cleanest yet safest fixtures to place in your home.

There are a few things that you would need to keep in mind, though, before you go off and buy yourself the first bathroom faucet you see. The first thing you have to take note of is that brass bathroom faucets are particularly expensive, which means you will have to cough up quite an amount of cash for good bathroom fixtures. Also, you will have to watch out for the many imitations out there, some of which will claim that their fixtures are made from pure brass, when in fact they are only selling plated metal or worse, plated plastic. A good test for this is to hold the fixture in your hand, as brass fixtures will weigh a lot more than ones made out of other metals. Keep these in mind and be aware in order to be able to get the best brass faucets that will truly be worth what you spend on them.…
