‘Kitchen’ by Banana Yoshimoto – Review

One of the many appeals of Banana Yoshimoto’s novella Kitchen is that it deals with feelings everyone can relate to. Everyone has been hungry, and images of hunger, food and meals are plentiful in the novella. Other common feelings also come up, especially sadness and loneliness.

Early in the book, the reader discovers the protagonist, Mikage Sakurai, was orphaned as a child, and that her family had decreased until she was the only one left. Mikage feels she is truly “all alone.” At one point, she says, “We live like the lowliest worms. Always defeated¾defeated we make dinner, we eat, we sleep. Everyone we love is dying.”

Despite the many sad events of the book, though, its tone is not generally one of sadness. This is because, despite all the negative turns of events in their lives, the characters know how to deal with unhappiness. Mikage, Eriko and Yuichi know how to be happy.

At first, Yuichi doesn’t seem to have a good way of coping with things that trouble him. This fact is first mentioned by his mother, Eriko. Eriko tells Mikage she knows she hasn’t been the perfect parent to Yuichi, because although he’s “a good kid,” there are some things she wasn’t able to teach him, things that “slipped through the cracks.” Eriko knows she didn’t teach Yuichi an effective way to deal with other people, and as a result “he’s confused about emotional things and he’s strangely distant with people.”

Yuichi shows this in the way he reacts to Eriko’s death. He avoids calling Mikage to tell her until a month after it happened. His reasoning was that telling Mikage would make Eriko’s death real for him. Yuichi didn’t want to have to deal with Mikage’s reaction. When he finally does call her, and they sit down to talk about it, Yuichi is drunk. In fact, he’s been drinking often in the weeks since Eriko died.

Yuichi learns to be happen when, still feeling terrible about his mother’s death, he goes to see Chika, a close friend of the family. Chika sends him off to an inn where he can be alone to think. Yuichi had been thinking about living with Mikage, but felt as if he needed to “pull himself together” first. While at the inn, Yuichi realizes he really does want to be with her. Yoshimoto ends her novella with Yuichi’s cheerful declaration that he’s going to pick up Mikage at the station. Readers get the sense he’s finally pulled himself together and can be happy with Mikage now.

Eriko had also gone through a time in her life when she was sad and confused about what to do. Yuichi tells Mikage that his “real” mother was another woman and that Eriko, who is transgendered, is Yuichi’s biological father. “After my real mother died,” Yuichi says, “Eriko quit her job, gathered me up, and asked herself, ‘What do I want to do now?'” After the death of his wife, the man who would become …

For centuries, we have been locked into gender roles of male as the provider and protector and female as home maker and nurturer. But the 21st century has seen the beginning of role reversals within the family. Men are opting to stay at home and become house husbands. The West, especially Canada, UK and USA, has accepted this new concept of stay-at-home husbands. Asian and Indian families are still a long way from doing so. Muslims believe that it is unislamic for a man to take on the role of a woman.

Ancient Egypt Fish Tank Decor

There are numerous ancient civilizations that have awesome fish tank decorations these days. These include the Mayans, Asian and the always famous Greek ruins. Using any of these would create stunning scenes of times gone by, producing an air of wonder and discovery in your very own room.

The one ancient civilization that I personally love to use in my tank designs is the Ancient Egyptians. Who has not seen at least a photograph of the Great Pyramids or the towering mighty Sphinx. With the cool and extremely detailed tank ornaments you can get these days, you will be able to bring the exact replica of the Egyptian landscape into your aquarium.

With the Egyptian tank decor, you basically have a couple of options. You could create an outdoor scene, an indoor scene or just use Egyptian artifacts.

To create an outdoor Egyptian scene, you would be utilizing replicas of the massive structures that are synonym to Egypt. These would include the pyramids as well as the Sphinx. This is placed on top of a sand colored gravel to give it the impression of being in the desert. If you plan to use plants, they should not be of the leafy variety. Will Commercial Zoning Increase Your Property Value?

If you have the correct combination of items and you have a large enough pocketbook, this may be your ticket to retirement. But sometimes, it’s your ticket to the poor house.

I looked at a home that is zoned mixed use. In this area, this means that you can either use the residence as a home or use the residence as a commercial site. These types of sites are usually limited to low impact items such as office buildings, apartments, etc.

What’s the catch? Well, you’ll have to own a large enough parcel of land to make a commercial deal work. This is why you see five homes along a busy street all for sale at once and the zoning is commercial. This is because in order to be approved for commercial development, there must be a large enough parcel to make the commercial development work.

Usually, for mixed residential zoning, these areas are close to town or close to other apartments or business in the area. I’ve appraised several of these types of property. Many times, advertising the zoning as mixed use is enough to sell the home for more just because it may appeal to that specific buyer that wants to live in the same home and run a business out of the home. One home that I appraised offered a living area on the main level and a daylight basement offered office buildings that were rented out.

My understanding is that some banks that specialize in residential zoning will not loan money on mixed use properties. This, of course, is a downfall, if you’re trying to get a residential loan. Some buyers will not want to use their residential home for office use. This will limit the number of buyers that may want to buy your home.

So, will commercial zoning increase your property value? If your home is a residential home with the best use as a residential use, commercial zoning may decrease your home value and make it difficult to get a loan and make it difficult to sell, because you’ll be located on a busy street. If your home is residential use and the highest and best use is to build a commercial structure, most often, your land used as commercial use will be more valuable than your home used as residential use.

Field tile is the main body of tile for your remodeling project. For example, if you are tiling your shower, the field tile is the tile on the walls of your shower. The field tile covers the largest area of ​​your tiling project. A common size for field tile is 12 inches by 12 inches. Field tile is sold by square footage, so you need to take the area for the field tile and calculate the square footage.

Trim tile is divided into two categories:

  • Accent trim tile (to be set in with the field tile)

How to Measure

Let's go through an example to help you go through the tile measuring process. In this example, we are going to install tile for a bathtub with a shower surrounding.

For a bathtub with a shower surround, you will need a tile for the three walls. The tile will be installed to a height of 6 feet (6 ') above the tub deck.

The first wall is 5 feet wide. The two end walls are each 3 feet wide. To determine the tile square footage, you need to measure the width of each of the three walls and multiply it by the height of your shower surrounding.

Let's start measuring the first wall:

  • 5 'wide (60 inches) by 6' feet tall. 5 X 6 = 30 square feet.

Then you need to measure both end walls:

  • 3 'feet deep (36 ") X 6' tall. 3 X 6 = 18 Square feet.
