Denim And Diamonds – The Hottest Trend In Theme Parties

The hottest trend in party themes is the Denim and Diamonds Party. They can be as casual or as elegant as you would like depending upon the type of affair you are looking to host. This unique party theme makes for a great inclusive event where your guests can partake in the activities and theme by wearing appropriate attire. They can be used for informal gatherings for events such as birthdays, graduations or anniversary parties. This very popular theme also makes a great informal gala when you have many invitees and a more formal venue, but want to keep the attire and menu casual.

Themed party invitations will get your guests in the mood to participate in your theme long before your party begins. Invitations printed on denim look paper with rhinestone lettering or accents make perfect invitations. If you are making your own invitations, you can accessorize with some glitzy accents by visiting the scrap-booking section in your local craft store. Usually there are stuck on crystals in a host of shapes including stars. Whether you are hosting a denim and diamonds birthday party or a traditional fundraiser, don’t underestimate the importance of tying your invitations into your party theme to encourage your guests to attend and participate.

What should guests wear? Dress code is pretty simple. Ladies should wear something denim – jeans, skirt or jacket, and include a little sparkle. Blue sequin tanks or tops worn beneath the denim jacket makes a classic outfit paired with some designer look cowboy boots. Party attire may also include accessories like bejeweled bandanas or cowboy hat. Gentlemen can leave the sparkle to the gals, and simply wear a nice pair of boots, denim jeans and a long sleeve western shirt in the color and style of their choosing. Bolo ties can also be worn to promote the themed look for the gents.

Menus can vary at these western themed events depending upon how many attendees are expected. Most commonly, buffets are the serving style of choice. Hearty appetizers such as meatballs or chicken and pasta dishes are popular choices. Other more country-style food choices served at denim and diamond parties include: BBQ ribs, fried chicken tenders, 3-cheese macaroni and cheese, chicken and cheese quesadillas, chili and corn bread. Denim and diamond party affairs are typically not sit-down dinners and encourage noshing and socializing on the go.

Decorations are typically a mixture of sparkle and elegance with a country twist. Traditional table décor should include denim-like or traditional red and white checkered table coverings, paired with candles and glittery centerpieces. Toss a few diamond like crystals amongst the serving dishes on the buffet table and select paper napkins with a denim pattern. Large, diamond-shaped crystals can be found in most craft superstores. Finally, all of these parties should include festive hats (especially if this is for a new year’s celebration) that include glittery cowboy hats or bejeweled bandanas.

SciFi Fish Tank Ornaments For Nerds

I am a nerd and very proud of it. I’ve always had a thing for science fiction. The appeal of traveling to the deep darkness of space and exploring uncharted territory has always had a great influence on my taste for movies and interests.

While I have been decorating aquariums for clients of mine to replicate scenes from Asia or underwater sunken ships or mermaids in Atlantis, my personal aquariums are all decorated with space ships and aliens from another planet. It’s actually pretty difficult to find tank ornaments of outer space and alien worlds. Honestly most of my own decor are non aquarium ornaments that I have carefully selected and prepared so that they would not have an adverse effect on my fish. But doing this without proper knowledge and the right preparation can kill the fish.

In this short guide, we’ll look at some of the yank ornaments that are sold today that will transform your aquarium into that nerdy piece of art that you’ve always wanted.

UFOs And Aliens

There is one aquarium decoration on sale that I love and that I have in my tank. It is of a flying saucer that had crash landed on a small hill the craft is beautifully painted and detailed and the best part of all, it has a cave that the fish can go into. Apart from this flying saucer, there is also another one that is more colorful and hooks onto the outlet tube of your filter so that it moves along with the bubbles. The other one I also know of is a more earthly looking satellite which also moves with the water current.

For aliens, there are about a dozen or so cute looking colorful aliens with various number of arms, legs and tentacles. This make a great addition to your theme, especially if you are going for the colorful space ship.

The Doctor Who Collection

No one proud enough to call themselves a nerd would not know of Doctor Who. The time traveling doctor has been a feature in our lives for decades. Now you can have your own Doctor Who Theme in your aquarium two.

The ornaments you can get for this theme include a really cool looking TARDIS. For those who do not know what this is, it’s an old London Police Box which the Doctor uses to travel.

For your aliens, you have the Daleks, which I have seen in Red and Yellow as well as the robots. You can either get a complete Cybermen figurine, or just its helmet which is super cool or a flat background decor.

It’s really a shame that no one created a figurine of the Doctor because I would do anything to get my hands on one.

If this is not enough, the last piece of alien decor you can get is an Alien Skull. The eye sockets allow the fish to go in and the skull cavity is very large so it makes an awesome …

Dry Rot Remediation

Dry rot is a very common problem in the NW because we get so much rain. Moisture and lack of air circulation is all you need for dry rot to appear on wood. Wood rot problems are especially dangerous when rot appears on the wooden structure of the house. Once the fungus starts to grow on your structure, it destroys wood tissues which are responsible for the wooden structure to be firm and solid. Dry rot causes wooden parts of your house to decay, become soft, lose its shape, and loses the ability to withstand weight pressure. This leads to the leaning of the house to one side, dropping of the floor level, sagging in open spans of wood (such as garage door openings), and roof structure deformation. All these signs are warnings to us that something is going on inside the structure of our house and something may be affected by dry rot. The rot problem has to be taken care of right away once it has been determined!

If you notice a sagging corner on your window sill it didn’t appear there over night. If you are able to see rotten particles with your naked eye without taking apart your wall it means that the rot has been inside for quite some time and is in the stage where the rot starts to affect the surfaces that are visible. One sagging corner of the window sill may not just be a simple repair of a small piece of your sill but it might mean that the whole window frame is affected by dry rot and has to be repaired. That’s why it’s very important to fix the damaged areas once you suspect that you have a problem.

Now fixing dry rot damage is not a simple procedure, most of the time dry rot has to do with your structural framing, except when it’s just the exterior siding trim that is rotting. But most cases, dry rot gets to your framing. You have to realize that the part of your wall that is rotting is actually holding the wall itself, so if you will just start taking studs out to replace them with new framing, the whole wall may just collapse. It is the same story with the floor joist system or roofing trusses. So dry rot repairs often require building additional support walls or installing supporting posts to hold the rest of the structure while you are doing the rot repairs to the wall. Things get more complicated when you are dealing with two or three story homes. Then you have more weight pushing on your damaged walls and you need additional support to withstand all that weight. Fixing dry rot requires not just good carpentry skills but also engineering knowledge of weight distribution and support.

One more important thing about dry rot and what’s causing it, that I should mention, is the vapor barrier on the house. Since the vapor barrier is the under-layment that separates your …

Using Ladybugs and Diatomaceous Earth to Control Aphids

I’m trying something new this year to control aphids on my micro farm. Ladybugs and diatomaceous earth.

The first aphid controller I used were the Ladybugs. I had ordered these sweet honeys (1500 of them) a while back because the aphid population had seriously exploded; but because they weren’t packed properly, the container they were shipped in was cracked wide open, and only about 50 of the original 1500 arrived. And, to make matters worse, because it was so hot in Ohio where they were coming from, they couldn’t be shipped until the temp came down. Finally, they arrived and last evening, the ladies were released and the aphid problem should be a thing of the past for this season. You release ladybugs at twilight in order to prevent them from flying off. Apparently, they do not come equipped with night vision goggles. Next year, I’ll order earlier to avoid the heat and get a head start on the aphids before they get out of control.

The other tool I will use this year to control aphids will be diatomaceous earth, or DE for short because that word is way too long and arduous to type. DE is the fossilized skeletal remains of tiny microscopic plants called diatoms. They come in a variety of shapes like snowflakes, cones or tubes, and their shape has a great deal to do with the effectiveness of DE. DE is not a pesticide, but works through a mechanical means. Insects are covered with cuticle, which is a waxy coating that protects their bodies. DE, with it’s razor sharp edges, cuts through this waxy substance, lodging between their body plates; and because DE is also quite porous, starts sucking the juice out of them, drying the buggers out. Since using DE is a mechanical process and not a pesticide, bugs can’t develop an immunity to it.

You can use DE as a wormer for your pets, or put it on their coats to kill off any fleas or ticks. There are a few warnings about DE you should pay attention to. Never buy DE that is swimming pool grade. This stuff may be great for filtering out pool water, but you don’t want this in or on your body, or your pets bodies. It can cause silicosis, a lung disease which can be permanent. The DE you want is called FOOD GRADE or GARDEN GRADE diatomaceous earth. But even with the safe version, you do need to take precautions. Try not to inhale it, because it can cause mucous membrane irritation. And since it’s like millions of microscopic katana blades, it goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyway); don’t get this stuff in your eyes. I’ve bought some of those hospital-type face masks you can buy at any drug store or multinational corporate big-box store to keep the dust out of my nose and lungs, and I’ll use some safety glasses to keep it out of my eyes. Goggles might work better.

Grass Colors and What They Mean

Everyone knows that grass is green, but did you know that your lawn can change its color slightly throughout the year? The color of grass depends on the environmental conditions – how much sun and rain it gets and what the soil is like. Most subtle color changes are harmless, but if your lawn seems to be changing color drastically it could be a sign of an underlying problem. Below are some colors your grass may go, and what they all mean.

Dark Green

Dark green grass is a sign that it’s producing lots of chlorophyll – this is a sign of a healthy plant. It’s got enough nutrition to produce chlorophyll and thrive. Your grass may turn a darker green during the spring and summer when it has lots of sun, especially if you’ve fertilized during the spring. Make sure your lawn has enough water and you should have a lush green garden all summer long.

Yellowish grass isn’t producing much chlorophyll because it isn’t getting enough of the right nutrients from the soil. You may need to use a fertilizer to get the green color back. The best time to fertilize is during the spring and autumn, as this gives the grass time to take on nutrients before its main growing and ‘sleeping’ phases. If the fertilizer doesn’t work your grass may have a disease.

A red tinge to your grass could mean several things. Sometimes it’s just a sign that the grass isn’t producing a lot of chlorophyll. If your grass turns red during autumn and winter, wait for the warm weather to come round again because this might cure the problem. Some grasses, like Ryegrass, have a natural reddish hue so check what species your plant is. Red can also be a sign that the plant is under stress – this could be because of environmental conditions, or it could be because of disease.

Orange color is normally produced by fungi that live on the grass plant. Rust disease for example leaves orange-colored spores that come off if you rub the grass between your fingers. They’re harmful and can kill the grass, but they usually don’t kill the whole thing off. If you do have rust disease you’ll need to treat your lawn to minimize damage.

Tan color

By the time your grass goes tan it’s most certainly dead. Tan grass has been scorched and dried out in the sun, shriveled due to lack of water, or mown too harshly and succumbed to damage. If you’ve looked after your lawn and it’s still dead it’s probably been a victim of disease.

You should always try to make sure your grass has a healthy growing environment, as this may halt or reverse the color-changes you see. Make sure your lawn gets enough water and nutrients and ensure that you mow correctly. A stressed lawn is prone to weaknesses and this is when negative (although reversible) changes can occur. If nothing works then you should …

What to Do When Your Natural Gas Leak Detector Goes Off

So you’ve done the smart thing, and installed a natural gas leak detector in your home. So what do you do when it goes off? Knowing what to do (and what not to do) in the event of a gas leak can literally mean the difference between life and death. Read on to discover your best action plan in the event of a gas leak.

First, understand that natural gas is odorless. That nasty, rotten egg smell is mercaptan, an additive put in by the suppliers to act as a warning. If you smell it, that means there is gas in the air…but not necessarily at dangerous levels. That’s one reason a natural gas leak detector is so useful. Not only will you have a better idea of what concentration of gas is accumulating into you home, but you will also have a sure-fire warning system that alerts you to leaks even if you are asleep. A nasty smell is no good to you as an alarm if you’re a deep sleeper, or even if you have a cold or otherwise impaired olfactory senses.

So what do you do when the alarm sounds? First of all, don’t panic. Natural gas leak detectors are designed to go off long before gas has built up to dangerous levels. They are rated according to their Lower Explosive Limit (LEL), which means the percentage of the LEL the gas had to reach before the alarm goes off. 100% means that your house is in danger of exploding. If your detector is triggered at 15% of the LEL, that means you have plenty of time to take action before dangerous levels are reached.

Next, make sure there are no open flames. If there are, put them out immediately! This includes cigarettes, candles, or anything at all that is burning in your house. natural gas is extremely flammable and combustible, and an open flame plus gas in the air equals fire, or explosion. Turn any gas appliances off, and put out any pilot lights.

Do not touch or operate any electrical equipment. This includes lightswitches, and even the telephone. Again, even a small spark can ignite the gas. Don’t unplug appliances. If you need light, use a battery operated flashlight.

Open all the windows and doors to disperse the gas. If your natural gas leak detector is still going off, or you suspect that there is still a leak, turn the main gas line off and get out of the house. Call your fire department and your gas company from outside of the house, either on a cell phone or from the neighbors. It’s a good idea to keep emergency numbers in your car, so you don’t have to worry about grabbing them if you need to vacate the premises in a hurry.

Once you have your natural gas leak detector in place, it’s a good idea to make up an emergency plan, and practice it with your family. The best protection, after all, is preparation!…

Characteristics of HPV and Genital Warts

Most people are aware about this Human Papilloma Virus and genital warts whether dealing it personally or supporting loved one who is infected by the virus. But for those who are not familiar with HPV it is better to get familiarized with its characteristics such as the appearance, mode of transmission, symptoms, preventions and treatments.

A genital wart is a skin ulcer that typically appears on the outer layer of the skin and is composed of small inflammation. Warts have different types and are classified by their location and appearance in the body. Genital warts are caused by HPV that is highly contagious and can be transmitted from one person to another or by touching an object used by an infected person.

The mode of transmission can be through the opened skin that has cut, scratch or abrasion. However, the most feasible mode of transmission of the virus to other individual is through sexual activity. On the other hand, some individual carriers do not develop any warts but they can transmit the virus. The most susceptible group to the virus is the children and young people. It is highly contagious and sometimes warts become visible after a year subsequent to the infection. Other people who took medication that restrain the immune system are more susceptible to HPV and likely to develop genital warts.

The favorable habitat of HPV is the moist and warm environment such as swimming pool and bathroom areas. It can also be found in public places that is frequently visited and utilized by many people that is why if possible avoid public places including floors of public swimming pools, public shower floors as well as locker rooms in gyms even in shoes.

Observing the proper precautions will decrease the tendency of contamination by the HPV. If genital warts have developed avoid touching it then to another part of your body because it may be transferred to other areas of your body. 7 Key Tips For Building the Perfect Chicken Coop

Building the perfect chicken coop in your backyard can be a lot of fun if you have the correct plan for it. The biggest mistake lot of people commit is to start building a chicken house without proper planning. This will not only make it a difficult experience but will also result in you overrunning your budget.

Here are seven key tips that will help you in building the perfect chicken coop:

1) Sizing: Proper sizing of your chicken house needs to be done based on the space availability and the number of chickens you want to have. Always plan for some extra capacity in case you decide to add some more chickens in the future.

2) Orientation: Orientation of your chicken house should be such that you get adequate sunshine and you protect the chickens from the cold draft. This step is very important for building the perfect chicken coop and caring for the health of your birds. Very cold weather and high levels of moisture will make the chickens fall sick. So proper orientation planning is critical. If required take professional help here.

3) Protection: Proper protection for the chicken house is another important aspect of planning. You will have to protect the house from all sides so that it is predator proof. The surrounding area needs to have a wire mesh so that rats and foxes cannot burrow into the house.

4) Roosting: Plan for properly spaced roosting poles for the chickens to sleep. This will ensure good health of the chickens and you will get good quality eggs.

5) Nesting: For the chickens to lay eggs you will require nesting boxes. These boxes should be placed in a dark corner inside the coop. Make sure you have one nest box for every 3 to 4 chickens. These boxes should be at height above the ground but below the height at which you have the roosting poles. This is the normal practice that is followed when building the perfect chicken coop.

6) Feeder: Your plan for the chicken house needs to have feeder and waterer inside the coop. This important for maintaining healthy chickens.

7) Waste Disposal: For easy cleaning and drainage of water it is best to have a slight slope on the floor. Alternately you may plan for placing removable plastic trays below the roosts for timely disposal of droppings.

If you keep these key points in mind when planning the chicken house, then building a chicken coop will be a fun activity.…

Countries Where Quality Marble Tiles Are Affordable

Marble tiles are not the cheapest construction materials in the world, and rightfully so, since these materials have certain unique advantages and effects that cannot be duplicated by any other natural stone, or other construction material, for that matter. Marble tiles have the ability to improve the aesthetic value of whatever room it is placed in, from your kitchen to your bathroom.

It can come in a variety of colors, shapes and vein designs, giving you a myriad of choices that will help make it fit into your home’s overall design. It creates a visual impact that can enhance a room’s overall design and beauty, but still maintains its functionality and effectiveness for whatever purpose it is used for. Marble tiles can be very durable, and with its hypoallergenic characteristics which help prevent bacteria and germs from surviving on its surface, it is also a great material to use with safety and cleanliness in mind.

The natural stone marble can come from a number of countries, most of which has a massive marble deposit which they quarry and sell in large blocks, exporting them to other countries which in turn supplies the finishing operations on the marble blocks, turning them into the marble products that we have today, such as tiles, slabs and other forms of marble products. Since these marble blocks actually originated from other countries, the marble tile products that we are purchasing can actually cost us a whole lot less if only we are able to purchase them from the countries wherein said marble tiles have originated from, although some factories in these countries may agree to sell the quality marble tiles to you for an affordable price if you buy them in bulk. Nonetheless, certain countries have the luxury of selling these marble products for a whole lot less since they have the raw material in abundance.

One country where you can get quality marble tiles for an affordable price is from China, which is where some of the marble blocks that we use for our marble products came from. Some of the factories in China actually have their own quarries and state of the art equipment that are necessary for extracting the natural stone from the ground, which is why a lot of the finished imported marble products that we have today have actually been manufactured in this country. Since these factories are able to develop new and improved ways and techniques of effectively and efficiently manufacturing marble products, they have contributed to the lowering of the prices of the finished marble products while still maintaining its quality.

You can also get quality marble products from other countries, such as Mexico, the former Soviet Union, even in Spain, since these countries also have an abundance of the marble deposits. Originally, quality marble tiles originated from Italy only, but that was before when it was the only country which had a massive marble deposit that they were able to quarry in order to produce quality marble …
